Background
Symbolic Mind Incorporated (previously known as Adam & Eva) is a team of entrepreneurs, data scientists and industry experts, working to make AI universally accessible.
Most AI products currently available use foundation models or foundation LLMs, however these models have two major issues as part of their nature. Firstly, training the models takes a significant amount of time and money, and secondly, due to their complexity, it’s almost impossible to understand why the system said or decided something.
Symbolic Mind is introducing an alternative – neuro-symbolic architecture – combining neural and symbolic learning, which acts more similarly to the human brain. Symbolic Mind is developing their neuro-symbolic AI architecture for public utilization, with a transparent and adaptable approach.
Symbolic Mind’s flagship products using their neuro-symbolic architecture are ADAM (Adaptive Deep Autonomous Machine), a longer term vision for an AI model to be used in real-time devices and robots, and EVA (Expert Verbal Agent), an LLM designed for thoughtful queries and problem solving.
The Challenge
They needed a hosting provider for training the EVA model, a project with specific, unique requirements. Unlike most AI models which only run on GPUs as their computational model, EVA can use either CPU or GPU or both. Thus, for their software development and testing they needed a CPU powered server. Additionally, they did not want to manage their server in-house, so needed a provider with the skills and expertise to manage their infrastructure for them.
Symbolic Mind was struggling to find a provider who could build a powerful CPU server, with capacity for significant memory usage, and in a data center with the required power and cooling facilities, for a reasonable price.
Their solution needed to be scalable. The initial build to train EVA required a high performance server suitable for testing, refining and making improvements. Depending on the success of the testing stage, they were considering a second server with further increased performance and memory to expand their platform.
Additionally, the server needed to be hosted within a stable jurisdiction, preferably the U.S., UK, or Europe. Due to the nature of the large companies Symbolic Mind’s products are designed for, data sovereignty, security and regulatory compliance are vital. Their potential clients are likely to be handling sensitive data, and require this peace of mind.
The solution
During their research, they approached many providers, but found either they were unable to meet their requirements, or, if they reached the proposal stage, were too complex or expensive. After reviewing proposals from many providers, Symbolic Mind felt their proposal from Hyve was the only option which met their needs and budget. The proposed solution was two stages of tailor-made servers, providing the power, memory and scalability required.
The Technical Support Team at Hyve then set to work building the bespoke 56-core CPU server for the initial phase. It was crucial for Symbolic Mind to be informed and understand the mechanisms throughout the deployment. Communication between Hyve and Symbolic Mind was maintained at all stages.
The solution has been delivering fantastic results for Symbolic Mind. Training their Eva LLM on the initial server hosted with Hyve, they achieved record 3Gb per hour speeds.
Following this success, Symbolic Mind are now moving forward with their next stage, exploring their options for scaling up to a second high performance server to expand their platform.
Hear from Symbolic Mind
“With so many providers it was either impossible to build the server we needed, or the cost was prohibitive. Working with Hyve was a straightforward process from the proposal to the implementation of the solution. Hyve was transparent throughout, and we were able to see and understand the whole process. We had some questions and clarifications, which were readily answered by the Technical Support Team. We believe this is a long-term collaboration as we continue to develop and expand.
I believe that Hyve is a very good partner taking into account the combined factors of the flexibility and scalability of their servers, their location, deployment process, and their transparency. We had a deep understanding of what we needed, and Hyve was able to translate this and build a solution that works for us.”
